Grunka Munka Games is a Seattle-based game studio. We focus on offbeat ideas and turning them into distinct, high-quality games that challenge expectations.
First Project
Grunka Munka Games was started by Andrew Ward and Matthew VanCompernolle after meeting at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment Seattle and prototyping weird physics ideas. The first prototype of their space project was born and subsequently named The Enragement Ring. They brought the first prototype to iFest 2016 and Power of Play 2016 in Seattle Washington and received resounding praise for the idea. They then built up a team of like-minded developers, started development in full, and renamed the project "Collidalot".
Founding
Grunka Munka Games was formally founded on July 11th, 2017, and the team promptly went out and got free Slurpees to celebrate. The studio received funding from the Academy of Interactive Entertainment and was later selected as the first company for their US-based incubator program. Collidalot competed in the 2017 Seattle Indie Game Competition and took home the Audience Choice Award. With this momentum, the team set eyes on release and got approval from Nintendo of America to develop Collidalot for the Nintendo Switch.
