Merchant Adventurer is a business and economic strategy game that takes place from 982 to 1601. Players represent a European estate that attempts to manipulate governments and companies to gain wealth. Estates are placed in a random European country, from this point merchant companies can be started or invested in. Aside from taking loans from local moneylenders, companies can issue both shares and bonds to raise capital. Players can also invest in local industries. Companies are able to purchase wagons and watercraft to explore the globe and conduct trade. Other features include the ability to gain influence in government to impact taxes and foreign affairs, the ability to become a pirate or bandit to avoid limitations of diplomacy, the ability to colonize foreign lands, and the ability to play as non-European civilizations.
